February 14 2014 - Hot Top Ten

MIKE VENNART
Some nifty guitar riffs as you might expect on this solo work (released February 6) departure from the former Oceansize frontman and live guitarist with Biffy Clyro.

SHIELD PATTERNS - DUST HUNG HEAVY
Manchester's Shield Patterns have proved consistent in their output, from their debut single 'The Rule' last year to this latest. The project of artist Claire Brentnall (who sounds like a young Kate Bush), who first came to attention in 2012 with her 'Undecided' demo. Fragile vocals in a minimalist setting. Debut album long-awaited and much anticipated.

SLUMBER GIRLS - DARLING
A trio of 17-year-olds from Hertfordshire who debuted with their first four-track EP last month. We particularly love the 'Ohh's on this. Catchy little bugger.

WAYLAYERS - MEDICINE
New synth and sax release (out March 3) from the ‘atmospheric pop’ threesome before they head off to SXSW next month.

EIGHTEEN NIGHTMARES AT THE LUX - DEAD AS A BONE
Rampaging Londoners turning out heavy garage, krautrock punk riffs. Like a dirty night out on crack. Catch them live at London's Buffalo Bar on February 28.

HOCKEYSMITH - BUT BLOOD
Siblings Annie and Georgie, the Hockeysmith girls, foloow up last year's 'Let's Bang', with this latest from their debut EP to be released thru Double Denim in May.

SECRET COMPANY - Saviour
Essex foursome who seem to be currently riding on a high with this nicely orchestrated track, full of rich synths and rippling percussion, which is fast approaching 72,000 Soundcloud plays. This is their first official release on March 31 (though may be familiar from their Bandcamp page in 2012) produced by the band with James Yuill. Next up at Brighton's Sticky Mike's Frog Bar on March 8.

HARTHEIM - YELLOW
The first offering from a new Manchester outfit, who with this six-minutes-plus gem, have made a fine start. See our intro feature and the stunning visuals for the track here

HOOPLA BLUE - ORANGES
Taken from the debut EP 'Mother' which the Birmingham four-piece crew are self-releasing on March 22, and on this track guitarist Tom Hewson can be heard taking over on lead vocals for the first time. They play a launch show at The Victoria in Brum on release day.

THE WOLFHOUNDS - ANTHEM
Three-piece (they appear absent of a bassist at the current time) London outfit with their third single in 12 months on the Odd Box label. Part of a double A-side with 'Middle-Aged Freak'. Synths, choppy riffs and scorching vocals.
